FAQ's

Do I need to hire a board and wetsuit and bring them along when I am booked in for the WoW lessons?
No, we provide everything in the lessons. At the beginning of each lesson, you are fitted out with a wetsuit when it is required in the cooler months or a rash vest when it has warmed up. You are also then given a board for the lesson. After the lesson, if you want to use one of our boards for extra practice, we can arrange that for you as well.

Do I need to make a booking for a WoW lesson?
Yes, it makes it much easier for us to schedule coaches and lesson times when we know who is coming and when. This is especially the case in the busier summer months when quite often our lessons will be booked out at certain times. To ensure that you are not disappointed and don’t miss out on a lesson, we recommend that you book with us. This can be done via email, on our WoW office number (07) 5534 1886 or on our WoW Surf Line 0418 780 311.

How are the Beginners lessons structured?
We believe that the best way to achieve your goal of getting to your feet as quickly as possible is to give you a very good understanding of the movements and techniques required in surfing before we actually get in the water. During the learning process, different people understand and learn differently. Some people find it much easier to be given a verbal explanation, some people prefer to see a visual example, some like to actually feel the sensation but generally there is a big mixture of all three that combine together to optimise the learning and understanding process. In our lessons, we cover each of these, so every base is covered. We do this by initially giving the students an explanation and demonstration by one of our Surf Crew members of the various positions and movements used in surfing on an elevated board. The coach goes through and explains each stage while at the same time demonstrating it on the board. By doing this, we are allowing the auditory and visual senses to pick up different information. Then we bring out our Carve Board, which is the closest thing we have found to replicating the surfing actions without being in the water, and again demonstrate and explain some important concepts. Each student is then given the opportunity to ride the board to actually feel the proper stance, balancing sensation and the importance of heel toe weight coordination. After this, we move to the beach where each student practices the various movements and techniques on their board on the sand.

By the time we hit the water after this beach work, every student should have a very good understanding and picture in their mind of what they should be concentrating on when they catch waves. We take the students out into the water and help them initially catch waves but as the lesson progresses, we try to let you paddle on and catch them yourself. As everything happens so quickly in the surf, we are there in the water to assist, remind and correct you, and to answer your questions so you are improving and progressing all of the time

Once I have had a Beginners Lesson, do I need to have any more lessons?
We suggest that another lesson or two is very beneficial. The following lessons and the Surfer Improvement and Stillwater sessions, are fantastic for progressing and are very beneficial to continuing your learning curve and rate of improvement. Surfing improvement is based on solid practice of correct techniques.

What is covered in the Surfer Improvement sessions?
In these sessions, we aim to progress you to the next stage of surfing, depending on your ability, by increasing your confidence on paddling and catching waves, riding green waves, traversing waves both on you forehand/toeside and on your backhand/heelside. We also spend more time on issues such as surfer etiquette, wave selection and increasing your general surf knowledge. Each student progresses at their own rate, so these sessions are to help everyone work on something to improve that before attempting the next stage.

Are the Stillwater sessions a good idea? Are they really worthwhile in helping me learn to surf?
Absolutely. They are a sensational method of improving and learning board control, manoeuvrability, correctly trimming a board, coordinating paddling, turning and paddling again and becoming confident in your ability to control the board in the water. The difference when you get back into the surf is amazing. You know and understand how to paddle in trim correctly, sit on your board, turn it and lay back down, paddle for a wave and catch it. We couldn’t recommend them more highly. Your surfing will improve simply by knowing how to catch more waves.

Am I too old to learn to surf?
We have had people of all ages from 5 years old to 70 something come out and enjoy the fun and challenge of learning to surf.

I don’t feel comfortable doing a group lesson, do you offer anything else?
We are able to offer you a private one on one lesson, a private group lesson if there is a group of you and we can also organise sessions for private functions, corporate and business events and family functions. These will be charged slightly differently than the group rate but will include the board and wetsuit/rash vest. Please contact us for more information.

I have read about Snapper Rocks, Rainbow Bay and the Superbank in surfing magazines – how can we learn to surf in an area renowned for its excellent surf when it will be full of experienced surfers?
We are extremely lucky to be situated where we are. We are located in one of the best and most well renowned surfing areas in the world. Although there are the breaks for the experts, we also have the breaks which are perfect for beginners and our area is widely regarded as one of the easiest and safest areas to learn to surf – so we have the best of both worlds! This is combined with fantastic surroundings and quite often the thrill of surfing with whales or dolphins.
